What is it?
The proposal is for the George Lambton public playing fields to be replaced by a supermarket.
The playing fields are unique, very well used and irreplaceable in the town.
There is no need for another supermarket. Another supermarket at the edge of town will lead to even less people shopping on the High Street, which already has vacant shops.
The increased traffic from the supermarket will also make it much harder for the nearly 3,000 horses that must cross roads around Newmarket every day to access their exercise grounds.
Why is it happening?
The title holder of the land is trying to tear up the playing fields, which is not his property until 2068.
What do we want?
We would like the title holder of the playing fields to respect the lease and refrain from reapplying for planning permission on land until the end of the lease.
